Hello TooT!

What is the TooT? And why do we use it?!

The TooT is a relatively new instrument, designed to sit between the recorder and the flute, and is a great transitional tool for young learners who want to move to the flute, but who may not yet have the strength or stamina need to transition to a full size instrument.

The TooT is made of plastic, and is therefore relatively inexpensive (between £25-30) and comes with two lip plates, the integrated lip plate on the head which is designed to be the same as the lip plate on a flute, and the 'first note' lip plate, which is shaped similarly to a recorder mouth piece. This enables learners to produce a sound very easily, whilst getting used to the sideways position of the TooT, and the finger positions required.

When a pupil is familiar with holding and playing the TooT, the 'first note' plate is removed, and the leaner can get to grips with the required mouth position (embouchure) to produce a lovely sound, which then transitions them nicely to the full size flute.

The TooT is suitable for learners from the age of 4.
