5 Things to Know Before Starting Music Lessons This September
September always feels like a fresh start, doesn’t it? New school shoes, new pencil cases, and for lots of families… new music lessons! If your child is starting lessons this term, here are five things that will help them (and you) feel ready and excited.
1. Progress looks different for every child.
Some children race ahead, others take their time. Both are totally fine! The important thing is that your child is enjoying the journey — music is a marathon, not a sprint.
2. Practice doesn’t have to be perfect.
When we say “practice,” think little and often. Five minutes of clapping rhythms or singing a tune is just as valuable as working on their instrument. Keep it light, keep it playful.
3. Nerves are normal.
It’s completely normal for children to feel shy or worried at their first lesson. A friendly teacher and a fun, welcoming space usually melt those nerves away in minutes.
4. Celebrate the small wins.
That first note? Huge achievement! Remembering to bring their music book? Brilliant! Every step forward is worth celebrating — it helps children build confidence and feel proud.
5. Keep the joy alive at home.
Music shouldn’t stop when the lesson ends. Pop on a favourite song in the kitchen, have a little singalong in the car, or let your child give you a “mini-concert” after school. The more music feels like play, the more it sticks.
Starting lessons in September is the beginning of a wonderful adventure. With patience, encouragement, and plenty of fun, your child will not only learn music — they’ll love it.
